Been trapped in the lab lately as you can probably tell. The last handful of nights have felt like a powerpoint. As I continue to get my steps in, a feeling that I can only describe as my frontal lobe jerking back and forth helps me power through it all. Don't forget to eat, bathe, and roll the dice. The sleep that comes next will remain the payoff. Hope everyone reading this had a decent thanksgiving.. or at least one that’s worth talking about. That includes staying home alone high and Doordashing a Luxe box. Even if that's your whole life, it's still interesting. If the food is good enough then what else really matters? Nobody knows brodie.
Personally I spent my Thanksgiving by seeking new plains after a nice plate of turkey ass and a $50 eighth. Honestly I can count the things I'm truly thankful for on my fingers but those are definitely up there. Most days they feel out of reach and you're left to improvise. I don’t mind a little nonsense like that, though. At the end of the day, that’s what makes us human.
In recent developments, I’m happy to report that the last video glitch mixer I ordered (that I couldn’t show off last time due to shipping delays) has finally come in. Only took a few prayers inbetween but that’s chill. It should be apparent that this unit now holds the crown as my largest investment in this field, and also the bulkiest. Unlike the typical circuit boards these Etsy guys solder to random tins in their garage, this one's a repurposed radioshack doohickey with some knobs glued to it! To anyone asking why you would ever need multiple gadgets that all function the same, the answer is the variety in build quality which directly defines the output. There's also nothing wrong with being a guy who likes having options.
My experience with this mixer so far has been marked by the versatility that comes with having extra knobs to twiddle. I had spent the night playing some of the Aphex Twin tape along with copies of various YouTube videos and it went about as well as you would expect. Every second spent with this thing only made me feel closer to my dreams of becoming a "video DJ" of some sort. The main limitation is having only a single video input which makes it function more like a filter than a full on mixer, but that's alright. The best solution has been to actually daisy-chain it with the other units at bay. Whole thing is a mess but never have I been more thankful to have random cables lying around.
In my last post I had entertained the idea of creating visuals with/for others. For the first ever one, I sent a background to longtime friend Alfred Morose, who then came thru with a sweet sketch to accompany it! Check it out below:
I have admittedly been behind on new music and haven’t been buying vinyl lately. So long are the days of spending half a paycheck on "grails." When it comes to that game I'm comfy. However, this month has been the most excited I’ve been about music in a long time. Every day brings a new headline that feels targeted toward me. Just a few weeks ago Death Grips announced a new album and I promise to be more annoying than ever when it’s out. I saw them a couple of years ago in DC and it’s still the best show I’ve ever been to. Say what you want about their fans smelling like ass but the energy was unmatched. I broke my glasses in the moshpit and picked up a RAM stick off the floor, presumably from someone asking where their phone went.
Max B is free, and as someone who grew up around oldheads I gotta say that shit is HUGE. I usually enjoy French Montana slander, but he likely just set his man for life with that Dubai money so I’ll let it slide for now. Also gotta shoutout the new albums from Armand Hammer, Pink Siifu, Danny Brown, and Starker.. all easy contenders for album of the year. Adu 2 by Boldy James was also solid, though not quite on the same level; I gave up trying to keep up with his output a while ago but this ended up being a fun listen. Can't go wrong with those beats.
On a related note, I recently took the time to assist with an interview of local rap artist tyler donavan. I originally discovered him last year as an opener for various shows in the 757 area and felt positive spirits in his work that have stood out to me ever since. If you want to hear rapping about clouds then go check him out. In all seriousness though he was a great interview and gave me several bulletpoints to walk away with. All that talk about the importance of being yourself sounds cliché but it’s true, and there’s no better time to do it. Not sure where the interview will end up but I’ll share a link to it when it’s available.
Still here? Alright, back at it again with the update log:
- Added Light/Dark Mode switch to taskbar
- Revamped header on Videos page
- Improved About and Gallery pages, again.
- Improved Blog CSS. Try viewing this page on a window larger than 400px now.
- Fixed broken links on classic mode
Just looked at my watch and sighed. Guess it’s time for me to dip for now. Been in the lab a lot lately, which is great, but that also means I haven’t had too much time to check on the site. After trying to implement a dark theme, I felt like this was the least I could do to make it more complete. Honestly I'm not even sure how I endured the site being bright for so long. Once you go black, you can't go back. My biggest priority with the site right now is just making it look prettier. And also optimizing it, but who needs functionality if the aesthetic is nice? Let’s just pray that it all pays off.
Take it easy and stick around for the Christmas special…
