Mirror's Edge (2008)
Howdy, rockstar! Long time no see.. I’m enjoying your presence already. I try to make sure to throw these announcements up at least once a month but even that feels too long sometimes. So much can happen in that time and so much definitely has, at least in my lane. If you can’t relate then keep moving. This time of the year always gets mixed opinions from me and one can only hope whatever comes down the line can leave us with more to talk about. Summer's fading out, the leaves are starting to follow, and that only means one thing: finger that fat boy fall has commenced! On top of that, I have also landed a new (temporary) place to stay at. Does that mean I'm gonna be more active on here? Who knows bruh, in the meantime the frontpage is gonna feature a lil more of me rambling than usual..
Some Recent Arrivals:
"Facemelt 2" Print by al.divino x Tony Caves, Tornada Olivia “O_o…” Poster,

Buy art and sleep by it. The goal is to make your room look like you got hoodies you're never shipping out.
During my absence I have also found myself with a much more flexible schedule that aligns with my gross sleep habits. Out here the dawn rises at noon and the twilight will usually ride until a quarter past midnight. Three hours later you're expected to just pop an Adderall and dive into business. Hate all you want but the free time that follows will always prove to be a blessing.
One rabbit hole I have found myself tryna get into lately is the world of video synthesizers. While working on some newer stuff and just wanting to watch tapes on my CRT, I came across the video above.. undoubtedly the greatest showcase of a hobby I have seen in a while. The guy’s snappy delivery while he lays out all his gear is merely a sample of what has been laying the groundwork for my eBay searches. Very artful and I echo the guy’s mindset: “Spend a shit ton of money on something niche? Why not?” Can't say I haven’t tried that before.
Experimenting with material recorded onto tapes has been something I’ve been trying to do anyways. All I should say about that is the real fun isn’t actually getting your clips right. It’s the dealing with the mess of wires that will follow. Unlike the guy in the video, my setup is nowhere near as stacked and won't be for a while, but we all start somewhere. Just the other day I had to put a bounty out on a Dell VGA monitor. In a perfect world, old tech like that wouldn’t be as expensive as it is. In the meantime I bought a few cheap “video mixers” off Etsy. Whether they suck or not, we'll see.. hope to report the results next time I’m here.
"Dirty Mix" Video Mixer
The last show I caught was Swans a couple weeks back. Hadn't planned on it but they were playing at a theater nearby and I have been a casual fan of them for the longest time. Ya boy still went in there partially blind. Many people waiting in line behind me were saying they had traveled from different states just to see them. One guy even said he drove in 12 hours from Florida. Couldn't do much there besides respect the commitment. It was my first time seeing them and it'd be near impossible to really say what to expect. Word is this is Michael Gira's last tour with a full band, though you never really know with him.
About an hour later I made it inside and managed to score a spot in the front row. The entire band was easily less than 5 feet away from me. Made sure to bring earplugs, of course. Anyone who's seen Swans live cannot underestimate how loud they play.
And the show itself? Loved every second of it. The vibe is way more intimate and a completely kind of energy than the usual shows I'm at. With this tour there were only two rules: no phones and no moshing. Say what you want about forcing the audience to really engage with the art, I'm sure that's part of it. Let's be real tho.. they just added that last one because white people can't mosh for shit. At least not at the shows I go to, don't even wanna imagine what tihs one would look like. A few years back I saw a pit open at a Freddie Gibbs show and it lasted as long as you'd expect. I love Madlib but the idea of trying to crowdkill to his beats is hysterical.
As someone who’s never seen Swans before, I was enthralled at Michael Gira’s stage presence the entire time he was up there. His voice cutting through band playing that loud made every track feel like a shot of adrenaline. Don't even get me started on when he played "A Little God in My Hands." Ima just say he runs that band like it was the navy.
He’d take a quick break to shift into the next song, then raise his hands to command the band once he felt they were ready. It was like watching an ancient sorcerer casting spells with a posse of bards at his disposal. Toward the end, they had began playing some unreleased material, presumably for a live album they're working on. This is when shit got personal tho. If the drummer came in too early, Gira would point at them. If the guitarist hit the wrong note, he'd scold them (away from the mic because he knows what he's doing) with total authority. I overheard a few people in the crowd say they were angry at him but plenty of others were quick to remind them: he's Michael Gira.
Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind (Signed by Gira, Norm, Kristoph)
I got to meet him after the show, following a line that stretched from the smoking lounge all the way to the merch table inside. Didn't say much because he wasn't in the best mood but some of the other members were hanging outside and happy to chat with fans. If I ever see Gira again then I'd probably wanna ask about his work with the band 48 Cameras.. always found it interesting how those two projects are connected.
In recent events, just last night I watched the premiere of the celebration of life video for the late, great KingCobraJFS, and it might be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Very rarely will I get shaked up over the news of a celebrity death (unless their names are DOOM and Ka), but this one really hit me in a way I wasn't ready for. Much harder than expected. I first stumbled across Cobra about 5 years ago through reposts of his stuff being sent my way. Random clips of him talking to the camera then whipping up cheeseburgers with beef jerky and Doritos had me immediately drawn to his energy. He has not left my radar since. Despite his online notoriety, he always struck me as nothing short of a genuine person. Someone who knew how to stay true to himself without caring what others think.
Following the news that he had passed from a heart attack in his sleep, his father, Clint, released an hour-long tribute video detailing his son's life and legacy. It features a slideshow of childhood photos along with narration from his family. At one point, his sister reads a fan's poem while the chat sent an endless stream of green and black hearts. "At least he's with Ozzy now" was a message being spread throughout the night.
Then Clint stepped in, with Shon visble in the background, and delivered a wonderful monologue filled with love from front to back. He spoke of his son as the most unique person he had ever known and described how hard he had worked to stay close to him. When he shared details of Cobra's quirks, like taking hour-long showers or the day he came out as goth, it was both funny and deeply moving. In those moments you could feel just how much he cared for his son, especially when he mentions the changes made in his own life to keep him comfortable. That kind of love is rare to see in the world today, so I was moved to see it expressed so openly.
To me, living a good life means being able to find what you love and shape your world around it. Cobra did just that and did it in a way that many could only dream to accomplish. He will be remembered as someone who loved rocking out and drinking, which may sound simple, but it speaks to those who knew exactly what brought him joy. I came across a tweet that said something along the lines of "You can touch so many lives just by being yourself." That sums him up perfectly and if life had loading screen tips, that would be one of them. He was never exactly rich or famous but he spent more than a decade being one of the most authentic people you could find online. I never thought I would be writing about his passing. Even just a month ago I just assumed the guy was immortal.
If you aren’t familiar with Cobra, I highly recommend checking out the work of Seizurerobot5000! He has always been a personal favorite of mine for going above and beyond the average clip channels by including his own commentary on Cobra while splicing in smooth animations alongside some of that sick analog-to-digital editing I mentioned earlier. The guy loved his drink combos so crack open a Blue Moon and a Mountain Dew and toast to the legend.
At least he's with Ozzy now...
Still here? Alright, back at it again with the update log:
- Added “share button” for videos, which can now be accessed through their own URL on here - 3cks.net/#/watch/the-color-brothers for example!
- Added “filter” tab to Gallery page.. for those who just wanna see more of something than the other, looking at all the music fans on here.
- Added “blog” section to the taskbar so you can now read this whenever you like :)
- Added “friends of the site” to the Credits.. just to spread the luh
In the corners of my mind I keep calling this the “share the luh” update. We’re still at the stage where I need to shill this site, which is something I've always been terrible at. Doing it in person is worse and that's when it especially feels like I'm a hack! Hopefully this is a step in the right direction. Went back and tweaked a lil bit of the CSS too.
So far there are only two websites listed on the last section (lucke.neocities.org and 4nx4e.lol) but I hope to see more join the roster down the line. Making your own website is important in today's Internet climate where the majority is segregated to only a few social media platforms. If you have a website and think I would dig your energy, feel free to reach out. You already know where.
"Your internet search is over!"
P.S. While you’re here, check out the new Tornada zine: Redfaced Bastards 2!
Once again, many friends of the site from different corners have come together to birth a cavalcade of art guaranteed to knock. your. socks. off. The zines were first available in late September at CuckFest in Boston, and are finally being thrown up online. As of now, feel free to snag a copy from ColeDawg, who also has more information listed on his Newgrounds. I'm about to grab one and you should too. It's a small run so don't sleep on it.
That's all for now, take it easy boss..
